Celebration was founded in 1994, with Disney-owned land that hadn't been used before. The Walt Disney Company built Celebration to fulfill Walt Disney's original vision for "EPCOT" [Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow] as an experimental location where people could live, work, and play. When the Disney Company decided it was good land to build on, they started to cut down trees and it impacted the area. So, in order to preserve some of Florida's ecology, the company set aside land in Poinciana, Florida, for wild life conservation. The master plan architects were Cooper, Robertson Partners, Michael Graves, Philip Johnson, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Aldo Rossi, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects. The whole town cost 2.5 billion dollars. But, before people could buy a house they would have to put their name in a lottery and get picked to puchase a home site. According to Mrs. Barbara Newsome, one of the lottery winners, if you did get picked you would get a cooler of food with your house as a welcome present. In 1996 the dream was fulfilled and people started moving in.

Do You Know?
Joe Barnes was the first Town Architect.
